In China, Sea Cucumbers are called Hai Shen (海黄瓜), which translates roughly to Sea Ginseng. In Japan, they are called Namako (海きゅうり). The Red Sea Cucumber is called Aka Namako.
In Malaysia, Sea Cucumbers are called Gamat, usually in reference to the Golden Sea Cucumber - which is harvested for a variety of medicinal purposes related to inflammatory ailments.
In Indonesia, Sea Cucumbers are called Trepang. Trepanging is the process of harvesting Sea Cucumbers; the divers that harvest Sea Cucumbers are called Trepangers.
The Sea Cucumber has been severely over harvested in some areas of the world, over 22 species are in serious peril of being completely depleted. Once a year, in the month of October when sea cucumber muscle weight is at its greatest, the Canadian Government permits a very limited and short-term harvest of Giant Red Sea Cucumbers in the pristine, clear waters of the Pacific Northwest.
